Hello Humber Valley Families,
In our recent newsletter we let you know about a very special initiative called Buck-A-Puck for ALS. Launched by Humber Valley players and their parents this fall after the loss of beloved Humber Valley Coach Steve Daly to ALS, Buck-A-Puck for ALS aims to raise $1 million for ALS research and care in Canada. Below are the details of the fundraiser. All Humber Valley teams are encouraged to participate in the challenge and help raise funds for this incredible cause. Humber Valley will be awarding a party to the team who raises the most by February 28th.
We are a team of 13-year-old hockey players in the GTHL (most of us Sharks!) and are on a mission to raise a million dollars for ALS after recently losing our hockey coach, Steve Daly, to this terrible disease. ALS is a terminal disease which takes away a person’s ability to talk, walk and eventually breathe. Despite the challenges Coach Steve faced, he continued to coach us – using a text-to-speech app when he lost his voice and working the gate at games even after he broke his leg on the ice one day while running drills at practice. Through his battle with ALS, Coach Steve was living proof of all the lessons he taught us through hockey: be bold and brave, keep moving, and never stop fighting. To honour our coach, we created a fundraiser called “Buck-a-Puck for ALS” and are now on a mission to raise $1 Million Dollars for ALS research and care in Canada!
What is Buck-a-Puck for ALS?
Buck-a-Puck is a nation-wide, hockey-themed fundraiser designed to raise money and awareness for ALS in a fun, active and competitive way! Participants are required to shoot a hockey puck for every dollar they raise.
Prizes will be given to the participants and teams who shoot the most pucks. Some prizes include:
- 1 hour on-ice instruction by Toronto Maple Leafs defence coach Dean Chynoweth
- 3 day/2 night Fully Outfitted Canoe trip with Temagami Outfitters (incl. all gear and food $2000 value)
- $1000 Rec Room Experience
- Signed Leaf’s jerseys and sticks
- PS5 Gaming Console
- Apple iPhone 13 (128 GB)
- $500 Hockey Life gift card
- And more!
How can you help?
As a fellow Humber Valley Shark, we are asking you for your support by donating funds or registering as a participant (and add your team) at www.buckapuckforals.com. We know that a million dollars seems like an impossible goal, but we figured out that if every player in the GTHL raised only $25, then we would reach our goal of $1M and be that much closer to a cure!
All money raised will be donated to the Stevie Fever for ALS Foundation in partnership with the ALS Society of Canada. https://www.steviefever.com

Thank you so much in advance for your support. Together, we can put an end to this horrible disease.
Sincerely,
The Buck-a-Puck for ALS Kids
